  • Dividend Mania in Utilities

By Chris Hodge - May 13, 2013 | Tickers: EXC, NU, VVC

Utility companies are well known for a few things: being boring investments, being reasonably secure and for paying dividends. The problem is, security is a relative concept that's hard to nail down. So I've decided to look at three companies from the utility sector that pay reasonably high dividends and represent small cap, mid cap and large cap sizes.

  • The Madness of March and an Elite Group of Eight: Part Deux

By Jeff Binkley - April 10, 2013 | Tickers: DBD, GPC, TEG, VVC

A few weeks back, I wrote about The Madness of March and an Elite Group of Eight. Since then we’ve seen a couple of Cinderellas emerge. One whose glass slipper fit surprisingly well (FGCU), until it shattered when dancing with her cousin from up I-75 a piece (Florida). Another whose ticket remains un-punched and now gets to dance at the biggest event it has seen since 1965 (Wichita State more »

  • The Madness of March and An Elite Group of Eight: Part One

By Jeff Binkley - March 4, 2013 | Tickers: MMM, DBD, DOV, EMR, GPC, TEG, PG, VVC | Editor's Choice

Thanx for the great feedback.  I dropped the leprechaun stuff. (I had leprechaun on the brain... it's a long story.  I actually MC'd my local chamber of commerce dinner auction this past saturday as a Leprechaun in celebration of the upcoming St. Paddy's day holiday.)  Anyway,  thanx for the feedback. I have fully embraced the march madness theme and added some details about each of the first four "Division A" "teams".  Let me know if it works or not and any additional suggestions. I'll work on the "Division B" teams article (Part 2) while I wait for your feedback.  Best, Bink

p.s.  I'm having a tough time getting your editorial comments actually being viewable on my screen.  They often just don't show up and I only catch them randomly.  If not too much trouble, shoot me an email as well.  Thanx again, Bink

  • These Are Dividends You Can Count On!

    By Shmulik Karpf - February 22, 2013 | Tickers: T, LEG, VVC

In the current artificially depressed interest rate environment that we live in, it's crucial to search for assets that can produce satisfactory returns. Dividend payouts represent a relatively reliable source of income to investors. But not all dividends were created equal. Some have a big question mark hanging above them while some are as reliable as death and taxes. It's extremely important you know how to distinguish between more »

  • The Potential Stock of the Decade

By Ryan Guenette - August 22, 2012 | Tickers: CLNE, FGP, NGL, UGI, VVC

The national average gallon of gas costs $3.72, and has shown now exhaustion from its long run upward. On the other hand, the national average gallon of natural gas costs $2.13. Trucks and cars save $1.59 a gallon on fuel costs if they are capable of using natural gas, so it is of no surprise that many of the world’s largest trucking fleets are converting to more »

  • Income Investors: An Overview Of 4 Key Utilities

By Christopher French - February 21, 2012 | Tickers: AVA, PCG, SO, VVC

Utility companies can present excellent opportunities for income investors. But that does not mean that they make poor choices for other investors. Some utilities are investing wisely in unregulated businesses, while others are undertaking measures to position themselves for growth. The four companies below are all facing similar headwinds such as stiff competition, climate change, and government regulation. However, they are also benefiting from positive drivers such as new construction more »
