Foreign ETFs: Beyond BRIC
By Nihar Patel - October 12, 2012 | Tickers: EPU, THD, TUR
Much has been made about the BRIC countries and even I wrote an article on them before. Their economic potential is not to be trivialized. However, it is always prudent to look for the next article-friendly batch of countries that can be packaged into an acronym.
Risks to consider are that these countries are potentially even more unstable than the BRIC countries. They also have the same path ahead of more »

Turkey is No Turkey
By Nick Slepko - June 4, 2012 | Tickers: SCHW, NDAQ, NYX, TKC, TUR
Brand Turkey is working on its image abroad and struggling to overcome several centuries of bad press amongst all its neighbors. It hasn't helped that Greeks, Armenians, Lebanese, and other diasporas have had several decades to get their side of events out in the West and either establish blame or take credit for a number of Turkish accomplishments. Hopefully by the time New York-based Chobani and its "Greek" yogurt more »

Turkey's Got Talent
By Nick Slepko - June 1, 2012 | Tickers: KO, TKC, TUR, TKF, WU |
Turkey has increased its billionaires by 50% in the same time it has taken Warren Buffett to raise a similar amount in corporate welfare from US taxpayers. Despite the last several years of global financial angst, Istanbul is currently home to 38 billionaires (ranked seventh worldwide), none of whom are anchored to the oil curse like the majority of their neighboring billionaires, nor are they slaves to the yo-yo cash more »

Avoid the Professional Jive Turkeys when Investing in the Istanbul 100
By Nick Slepko - May 30, 2012 | Tickers: GE, ITKY, LMT, TUR, TKF
Turkey is a great investment for Americans, however, Americans looking for great investing in Turkey will have a difficult time.
Sure, Western-investors interested in anything remotely Turkey-related can buy what Coca-Cola CEO Mukhtar Kent and Western Union CEO Hikmet Ersek are selling, or they can acquire shares of NYSE-traded Turkcell. However, the iShares ETFs – the US-listed MSCI Turkey Investable Market Index Fund (NYSEMKT: TUR) and UK-listed MSCI Turkey (LSE: ITKYmore »)

Welcome to Facebook City, Turkey
By Nick Slepko - May 29, 2012 | Tickers: FB, GM, GOOG, LNKD, TUR
While social media might be a fickle investment mistress, it can be as telling as a friendly brothel madam when it comes to sizing up new markets.
After the insiders cash out on their Facebook (NASDAQ: FB) scheme and the company (eventually?) proves itself to be a going concern – maybe by starting to be as profitable as the slightly less ridiculous LinkedIn (NYSE: LNKD) which already takes in as much more »

No One's Business But the Turks
By Nick Slepko - May 29, 2012 | Tickers: AKBTY.PK, ITKY, GUR, TUR, TKF
Like America’s other unsinkable aircraft carriers during the Cold War, Taiwan and South Korea, Turkey has made the most of the stability it received and has steadily and successfully been implementing market reforms. This decade, Turkey is set to surpass anything the Ottoman Empire achieved in its six centuries.
Since 1923 under Mustafa Kemal Ataturk (easily one of the most pivotal figures of the last century – and possibly this more »

Gold is Telling us Something
By Peter Pham - May 24, 2012 | Tickers: SLV, JPM, GLD, TUR
The latest numbers published by the World Gold Council reveal that there is a sea-change happening in the gold market. It's no secret that central banks have been buying, intermittently, gold and adding to their official reserves. The first quarter numbers showed clearly that gold demand is rising in the East faster than it is in the West and this has helped push the price higher.

Can Turkey's Comeback Continue?
By Michael Gayed - February 3, 2012 | Tickers: IVV, TUR
“Comeback is a good word, man.” - Mickey Rourke
Turkey's market got hammered in 2011 with its stocks down over 30% as a result of not just concerns over a global slowdown due to the Eurozone, but also because the Lira (Turkey's currency) declined strongly as inflation picked up in the country. However, recent strength in risk-assets could result in a strong comeback for emerging and frontier markets, particularly more »
