This Media Company Is Donald Yacktman's Top Pick
By Anh HOANG - April 11, 2013 | Tickers: GCI, NWSA, MNI
Donald Yacktman, the founder and CIO of Yacktman Asset Management, is famous as a value investor, and his fund manages more than $16 billion. His philosophy is to buy growth companies at low prices -- the combination of “growth” and “value” investing. He looks for companies with three main attributes: Good business, shareholder-oriented management, and low purchase price.
Interestingly, his most favorite idea is News Corp (NASDAQ: NWSA). He owned more more »

Reading the Newspapers and Media Stocks
By Nate Wooley - February 25, 2013 | Tickers: GCI, NWSA, MNI, NYT, WPO
It's interesting, to me at least, to watch the old grey lady, The New York Times, as it attempts to get out from under The Boston Globe. The initial thought, when the Times bought the Globe, was that a northeast powerhouse newspaper could really gain some synergies. Guess not, given that the price the Times is hoping to get for the Globe is much less than it paid.

Why Mr. Underdog Stock Picker Underperforms
By Michael Hooper - February 22, 2013 | Tickers: SAM, JPM, LEE, MNI, UNP
There is a reason why a stock is trading below $5.00. Its prospects for earnings growth are slim or risky, sometimes the best its shareholders can hope for is a buyout or merger.

Pixelating the Old Gray Lady
By Asit Sharma - July 12, 2012 | Tickers: GCI, MNI, NYT, WPO |
One of the classic acoustical signatures of early morning in New York City's boroughs is the rumbling of heavy New York Times Co. (NYSE: NYT) delivery trucks dropping off bound stacks of the paper to neighborhood delis and bodegas. In recent years, as the economy has waned and more readers fire up a tablet while pouring their first cup of java, the presence of these once ubiquitous trucks has more » -
Frontrunning The Buffett
By Glen Bradford - June 6, 2012 | Tickers: GCI, LEE, MEG, MNI
Finally! Lee Enterprises (NYSE: LEE) has someone on their side of size! I just woke up to a text from my friend, "Front running Buffett .... Not bad."
Warren Buffett has found the space that I've been screaming about. I tried to call him a month ago but his secretary blocked me, as she has before a few years ago the last time I tried to call in about Conseco more »

What if They Are Right About LinkedIn?
By Matthew DiLallo - April 30, 2012 | Tickers: GCI, GOOG, LNKD, MWW, MNI
Facebook gets a lot of hype with its IPO rumored to give it a market cap of over $100 billion and its hundreds of millions of account holders but in the business world I hear more about LinkedIn (NYSE: LNKD) than any other social media tool or website out there today. Not everything I hear is good, as on one side of the argument you have those that will say more »

Bad Times for Media Players
By Eric Volkman - February 6, 2012 | Tickers: GCI, NWSA, MNI, NYT
It was undoubtedly a painful news item to report on; last week The New York Times ran an article detailing the lackluster results of its parent organization, The New York Times Company (NYSE: NYT). Operating profit for full-year 2011 cratered by almost 76% to $56.7 million, while net sank into the red by nearly $40 million in bleak contrast to 2010's profit of $107.7 million.
