  • Could Dollar Tree Gain From Wal-Mart's Challenges?

By Eric Novinson - February 15, 2013 | Tickers: DG, DLTR, FDO, FRED, WMT

Discounters might face some additional headwinds in 2013. Renee Dudley, at Bloomberg News, reported that internal Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) messages mentioned weaker sales for the discount giant so far in February and pointed out higher payroll taxes as a contributing factor. Bad news for Wal-Mart could mean a tougher market for every discounter, but investors may still have reasons to feel confident in Dollar Tree. (NASDAQ: DLTR)

  • 3 Discount Retailer Stocks To Consider Buying

By David Gould - December 10, 2012 | Tickers: DG, FDO, FRED

If you want to buy into retailers to capitalize off of holiday seasons, you need to understand that markets are "forward-thinking." Put differently, companies are valued today based on how they will perform tomorrow. Thus, the important thing to do is to invest on whether you think there will be any positive or negative "surprises" against the market assessment. A good way to gauge the market's outlook is to more »

  • Discounted Discounters

By Eric Novinson - October 25, 2012 | Tickers: DG, DLTR, FDO, FRED

A recent survey shows that dollar stores expanded their market share recently, even though some investors lost confidence in these discounters' prospects. The CSP Daily News reported that a Perception Research Services International survey showed that dollar stores attracted more grocery shoppers in 2012 as mass merchandisers' market share weakened slightly. More traffic could help dollar stores beat the earnings estimates like they did last holiday season, so the dollar more »

By RJ Towner - September 5, 2012 | Tickers: BIG, FRED, WMT

Discounter Big Lots (NYSE: BIG) issued disappointing fiscal year guidance to go along with its mixed second quarter results. Revenue grew 4.3% year-over-year to $1.2 billion, which was in-line with consensus expectations. Earnings from operations, on the other hand, declined 28% year-over-year to $0.36 per share, worse than consensus expectations. Still, second quarter results were overshadowed by the firm’s revised fiscal year earnings outlook, which was more »

By Himanshu Poddar - July 17, 2012 | Tickers: FRED, RAD, WAG

Many drugstore chains have been in the red for quite some time now, given the shift from brand to generic drugs. Rite Aid (NYSE: RAD) and Fred’s (NASDAQ: FRED) are certainly amongst them. • Treasure Hunt for a Cheap Dollar Store

By William Bias - July 13, 2012 | Tickers: DG, DLTR, FDO, FRED, WMT

While researching this article I decided to go to my local Dollar General (NYSE: DG) to do some firsthand research. Walking around the store I began to see the appeal of the dollar discount format. In the front of the store I noticed refrigerators with orange juice and milk in them. I also noticed grocery items to the left of the store that people could also buy on the go. To me this is an item of convenience for people who are in a hurry and don’t want to drive 30 miles to the nearest Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT). I noticed a yellow cardboard bin filled with yellow envelopes labeled “Treasure Hunt!” with various and sundry DVDs sold for $3 apiece. They are not obviously labeled, so you have to go through them to find your great bargain. Interestingly I found a great old science fiction movie “Deep Impact” for only $3, but I still didn’t buy because I am a real cheapskate.

  • A Cheap Alternative to the Dollar Stores

By Eric Novinson - June 12, 2012 | Tickers: DG, DLTR, FDO, FRED

Many well known discount stores are trading close to their yearly highs right now, as investors expect shoppers to pass up mid-market stores in favor of cheaper alternatives. Although this theory still seems reasonable, the rising valuations of the dollar stores have become a concern for some investors. An investor who wants to pay less of a premium for shares of a discount store might want to consider Fred's more »
