  • Travel Stocks To Take Your Portfolio Places

By Shaleen Lohia - March 12, 2013 | Tickers: EXPE, PCLN, TRIP

My work requires me to travel a couple of times a month and booking flight tickets and making hotel reservations look so easy now when I compare it with what my dad used to do 8-10 years earlier. The convenience offered by online travel portals like Priceline.com (NASDAQ: PCLN), TripAdvisor.com (NASDAQ: TRIP), and Expedia.com (NASDAQ: EXPE) make them attractive. Moreover, some of these also help us compare more »

  • Visa Power - Go Get It

By Shaleen Lohia - February 21, 2013 | Tickers: AXP, DFS, MA, V

I never really bothered to notice if I use a Visa (NYSE: V) or MasterCard (NYSE: MA) while buying something with my credit card. It has never made any difference to me, as I had to pay for what I purchased. But it does make a difference to these two big payments technology companies. After all, as more people use their cards, the companies receive more revenue.

  • Piping Hot Profits

By Shaleen Lohia - February 5, 2013 | Tickers: DNKN, MCD, SBUX

I love my coffee hot, and my mornings just got better. Yes, there’s a new Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) outlet near my home for which I’ve been waiting for long. The menu looks good, offering a wide variety of Hot and Iced beverages. Moreover, there are a number of things new on the food menu too (I’m definitely trying the Basil Tomato & Mozzarella Cheese Sandwich tomorrow).

  • Packing Up?

By Shaleen Lohia - January 14, 2013 | Tickers: LNDC, SEE, DOW

The last time I went to South Korea I found it very difficult to find a restaurant serving decent vegetarian food (Yes, I am a vegetarian). So I had to fill myself up with whatever was available that suited my palate. I have to go there again, but this time I’m going to carry some packaged food for myself. Some of these could well be packaged by Landec (NASDAQ: LNDCmore »)

  • Some Ketchup for Your Fries

By Shaleen Lohia - November 30, 2012 | Tickers: CPB, GIS, HNZ

I went to the supermarket today to shop for groceries, the usual, ketchup, frozen foods, sauces, and some ready to eat pasta meals (I live alone and not much of a good cook). To my joy I found some of my items at discounted prices. But to my dismay I found that when comes to buying stocks of players in the food industry there are no discounts and the industry more »

  • HP’s Autonomous Acts

By Shaleen Lohia - November 27, 2012 | Tickers: AAPL, DELL, HPQ

Hewlett Packard (NYSE: HPQ) delivered poor Q4 and full year results for fiscal 2012, much of which was largely due to disclosure related failures and misrepresentations at Autonomy Corporation, which HPQ acquired in August 2011 at 79% premium over its stock price. The U.S. computer giant announced an $8.8 billion impairment charge write-down and attributed more than $5 billion of that to accounting practices at Autonomy.
