  • A Challenging Pick

By Kelley Ryan - December 5, 2012 | Tickers: MRO, OXY

    The Conundrum

What would you do if confronted with the fact that one of the investors you admire most made a stock pick that was in direct opposition to your own?

    The Back Story

When I wasn’t eating over Thanksgiving weekend, I spent time researching some stocks I have been watching.  I was intrigued by Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: OXY), which was at a nice price with an equally more »

  • An Earnings Bullseye?

By Kelley Ryan - November 14, 2012 | Tickers: AMZN, COST, SHLD, TGT, WMT

This Thursday Target (NYSE: TGT) will announce their third quarter earnings, and I am anticipating they will beat analyst expectations yet again. Analyst estimates for this quarter are for 77 cents a share. Analysts seem bullish on the stock which has risen dramatically over the past year and many have raised price targets.

The third quarter for retailers can be dicey, as it is typically their least profitable quarter. One more »

  • Marketing Mayhem?

    By Kelley Ryan - May 29, 2012 | Tickers: FB, F, GM

Last week General Motors' (NYSE: GM) marketing department made waves not once but twice. The first was when they decided to stop advertising on Facebook (NASDAQ: FB). The announcement got a lot of attention as it was made just days before Facebook's IPO. The second was the announcement that they had decided not to buy an advertising spot during the 2013 Superbowl. Either one of these announcements made more »

  • Is Target on Thin Ice?

By Kelley Ryan - January 8, 2012 | Tickers: AMZN, AAPL, COST, SBUX, TGT, WMT

I have been considering writing about Target (NYSE: TGT) for some time now, and when I saw this image taken by the Minnesota State Patrol on 1/6/2012 I knew it was time. I would like to point out that normally at this time of year in Minnesota a semi can drive on the ice without breaking through. This is just another sign of the unusually warm winter we more »

  • In Defense of Oshkosh

By Kelley Ryan - January 5, 2012 | Tickers: NAV, OSK, CLX

Last January, I decided to try Magic Formula Investing. I didn't stick with it very long (through no fault of the formula), but I still hold many of the stocks I initially selected, one of which is Oshkosh (NYSE: OSK). So far this year I have lost over 40% in Oshkosh (luckily, I hadn’t invested a large sum). So here I am, nearly one year later, with shares more »

  • A Stock for the Long Haul

By Kelley Ryan - December 30, 2011 | Tickers: PCAR, WPRT

In my mind, there are a few companies that are akin to stock market royalty. They are not big growth stocks or stocks that will triple your money over the course of the year, but they are high-quality companies whose stock you can buy and practically forget about, and right now one of my favorites is on clearance. PACCAR (NASDAQ: PCAR) just might be my favorite stock, and right now more »

  • A Dividend Stock for the Slightly Daring

By Kelley Ryan - December 20, 2011 | Tickers: KRFT, MCD

It seems like most of the stock news out there these days is centered around European risk and the move to dividend paying stocks. I can understand why people are setting up shop in dividend payers. Watching the stock market this year has been a bit like watching a see-saw competition. The move to low risk dividend payers is abundantly evident when one looks at McDonald’s (NYSE: MCD) stock more »

  • Dear Mr. Hastings

By Kelley Ryan - December 19, 2011 | Tickers: AMZN, NFLX, OUTR

    Dear Mr. Hastings,

I am impressed with the way you have managed to convince everyone that Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) is a wilting flower. Last January I lamented the fact that Netflix shares were out of my price point. And, as is often the case, I convinced myself that I didn’t want what I couldn’t have. I loved reading articles that specified the ways in which the shares were more »

  • Market Games

By Kelley Ryan - December 13, 2011 | Tickers: ATVI, MSFT

This week has already been a big week for video games and it's only Wednesday.  With Zynga's IPO set for Thursday and the announcement of record-breaking sales of Activision's (NASDAQ: ATVI) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, things are getting interesting.

But weeks like these always make me wonder if Wall Street really knows what to do with companies whose primary source of revenue is people obsessively more »

  • A Sea of Green?

By Kelley Ryan - December 13, 2011 | Tickers: AMRC, BAMXF, WM

Nothing feels better than when a company you have invested in not only makes you some cash, but also does something for the greater good. It could be a large donation to a relief fund or making the switch to environmentally friendly packaging. Even better than these glimpses of goodness, however, is finding money-making investments whose main purpose is positive change. It doesn't happen very often, but every once more »
