Today I opened up my Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) shareholder proxy vote email. I was taken back to see a few of the proposals we have to vote on as shareholders. Here are two that stand out:
A NON-BINDING ADVISORY RESOLUTION TO APPROVE EXECUTIVE COMPENSATION.
On its own maybe not troubling but next was this more insidious proposal:
A SHAREHOLDER PROPOSAL ENTITLED "EXECUTIVES TO RETAIN SIGNIFICANT STOCK."
Huh? Why is this more »
It is always interesting to do some forward-looking calculations to understand what your margin of safety on a stock might be. Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) continues to grow its top and bottom lines respectably, and as the stock trades lower the earnings multiple (P/E) becomes even further compressed.
You can now grab a share of Apple on an ex-cash basis cheaper than you could before Jobs returned and Apple was more »
Apple Nearing End of Correction?
I'm getting the feeling lately that Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is now approaching the bottom of its recent correction. Apple has gone through similar corrections in the past, only to prove time and time again that these were buying opportunities. It seems you can't go more than an hour now on CNBC without hearing some sort of Apple bashing. Everyone is an expert on more »
When it comes to Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) ecosystem, most pundits and analysts are referring strictly to iTunes. iTunes sells music, apps, movies, tv shows and books, and while this is obviously a big part of Apple's ecosystem, there is much more to it that sits well outside the digital realm.
What am I referring to? 3rd party accessories. Yes, these accessories come in all shapes and sizes. iPhone more »
Android vs iOS
The Android mobile operating system by Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) is the main competition the Apple iPhone juggernaut faces. Android has commanded the dominant share in units sold but Apple has the trophy when it comes to profits.
If you have been watching the news you may have heard that Washington and Colorado have become the first states to legalize recreational marijuana. Washington State believes legalizing and taxing marijuana could bring the state almost $2 billion in taxes over the next five years. Colorado feels it would generate 100 million annually in tax revenue for their state.
Polls have shown that the majority of Americans support the legalization more »
Windows 8 Operating System is Coming!
Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) will be shipping its latest and greatest operating system Windows 8 later this year (in October). I've been following many of the tech blogs and other news sites that have been evaluating and reviewing Windows 8 and Windows RT (the tablet version). Let's just say the reviews I've read have sentiment ranging from the new OS being a more »
Microsoft Invests in Apple!
Way back when, Steve Jobs announced that Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) would be making an investment of 150,000 shares in Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) (Series A, non voting, convertible preferred stock) worth around $150 million. These shares would have been convertible after a period of 3 years into common stock at a conversion price of $8.25. By 2001 all shares had been converted into Apple common more »
Google Compute Engine Launched
Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) just announced at the "Google I/O" conference a new "IAAS" (Infrastructure as a Service) dubbed "Compute Engine." This is a major competitor in the cloud hosting space joining the likes of other tech titan competitors such as Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Rackspace Hosting (NYSE: RAX).
What is Cloud Computing?
Cloud computing is both the present AND future for companies more »
Could Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) stock really hit $7,756 per share this year? Maybe even next quarter? Well if we apply Amazon.com's (NASDAQ: AMZN) price to earnings multiple today, which sits at 189 to Apple's trailing twelve months earnings of $41.04 per share, we land on that magic number. That's right $7,756 per stub.
You might ask is this a fair multiple to give more »
One of the arguments I've made in my previous posts about Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is that the multiple the stock is awarded right now is far too low. The reason for this continues to be the fact that analysts (the "pros") have been horrific at understanding Apple and its future year growth prospects. Actually, they have not been too great at current year estimates but it is the out more »
Is this Mobile/Tablet Trend a Good or Bad Thing for Intel?
Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) stock has been sliding downward since May 2 when it was trading over $29/share. It's now down to a little over $25/share with continued weakness and negative sentiment in the media. One of the reasons that the media is using to explain this pullback is how mobile devices such as tablets and more »
The Rotten Apple
Another day and another Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) selloff. Seems like business as usual these days. Apple now trades for less than 9 times Enterprise Value/TTM Earnings. Trailing PE is a paltry 13.49 and PEG at 0.61, if you believe analysts' conservative forward growth numbers. It would seem there is no bottom in sight for Apple these days. Investors can't seem to get rid more »
Can Gamestop Remain Viable in this Mobile World?
One has to wonder after the latest numbers out of NPD if there really is a future for GameStop (NYSE: GME). NPD said game software sales slid by 42% in April compared to a year prior. Hardware sales were also down to the tune of 32%. This is not the type of trend you would see in a growth industry. Worse yet more »
News hit today that Foxconn is in preparation for building the Apple iTV. iTV will be a big revenue driver for Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) but more important than that, it will strengthen the Apple ecosystem in significant ways.
I suspect we'll see iTV launched in late 2012 or possibly the first half of 2013, based on noise levels out there today. Once it ships, it will become yet another more »
People often wonder how they can get rich like Warren Buffett. Amazingly, Warren himself has spelled out exactly how he does it year after year. Buffett knows he can do this because 99% of individuals do not have the emotional control to follow his perfectly laid out plan. He continually gives you his secret sauce if you only care to listen. I did listen to Buffett and have done extremely more »
